So, I was making dinner tonight....spaghetti with marinara sauce + garlic bread = yummy....and as I was digging in the pantry I came across a packet of Ramen noodles and got a little warm fuzzy that I feel the need to explain on here, of all places. Trav and I have been together for 13 1/2 years and have gone through several different stages of our lives together. Heck, we weren't even driving when we started dating (hehe). Well, one of those stages was our really, really broke college days.....the days where you weren't quite sure when or where you'd eat or if you'd have enough to pay for the water bill or just counting every single penny until your financial aid check was mailed at the beginning of each semester.
One of those dirt poor days comes to mind. I was a Freshman in college and lived in Elizabeth Hall at Murray State University. Travis lived a few dorms over at White Hall and was a Sophomore. I was sitting in my dorm room one night and got a call from Travis asking me to come over so we can figure out what we'd do for dinner. On a college budget, that most of the time meant throwing something in the microwave for a couple of minutes and...voila...dinner. On good days, it meant drive-thru!
Soooo, I walk over to his dorm and knock on the door. Immediately when he opens it up I notice that the lights are dim or out...wasn't quite sure. And then I saw the candles. Since he didn't have an actual table, he set up his wooden desk chair and had a couple of lit taper candles sitting in the middle. He also had two matching bowls of Ramen noodles, two plastic cups of orange Jello and two drinks....all with the exact same silverware placement, and a napkin to boot! So, there we sat....eating our Ramen noodles and Jello in candlelight. It is still the most romantic and adorable thing he has ever done....and there's no way he could ever outdo himself:)
We've come a long way since then, but it doesn't mean I don't sometimes miss those days of no worries and young love. At that point we had already been together for 4 or 5 years, but we didn't have adult responsibilities yet....or a toddler;) We now have the kid, the house and the minivan....and to think we started out not even knowing how to drive:)
